Types of Teaching Jobs
The Department of Foreign Languages, Khon Kaen University
(Northeast Thailand), seeks to hire teachers to handle a variety
of English courses. Teaching advanced conversation to
undergraduate English majors is an area of primary significance.
Other courses, including at the M.A. level are also on the list.
The basic criterions to bag a job here are a bachelor’s degree
and experience in the language-teaching field. However, advanced
degrees are appreciated and compensated at a higher rate.
Teachers are also expected to function as a resource for
developing his or her colleagues' proficiency in English. Casual
interaction on a
daily basis hones language skills and strengthens background
knowledge about the target culture needed by Thai teachers of
English who do not otherwise have the opportunity to interact in
English. For this reason, applicants who were educated in and
grew up speaking one of the standard varieties (e.g., British,
Australian, or North American) of English are preferred. In
connection with this emphasis on in-service development, it is
vital for the teacher in this position to be available as a
consultant throughout the workweek. Mentoring the colleagues in
producing scholarly publications is delivered better by teachers
with advanced degrees and experience. Serious professionals
skilled in both these areas are therefore hunted out by the
department.
In AUA, the teachers are required to take classes primarily in
the evenings from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the Department of
Foreign Languages classrooms. They handle students ranging in
age from teenager to adult who are generally highly motivated
and fun to teach. Regular classes are offered Monday through
Friday.
