Types of Schools in Phuket
In the year 1885, his Majesty King Chulalongkorn (King Rama V)
of Thailand bestowed His Royal Advice that the national
educational philosophy should be based on the principle of
learning modern technology from the western world while
preserving unique Thai culture and wisdom.
Consistent with that philosophy, Phuket has become the home for
many schools ranging from small language schools to large
international educational institutions. Phuket is a place where
students from all walks of life can experience the Thai culture
and lifestyle while learning new skills and languages taught in
both English and Thai.
This education policy down the years has also spelt boon for the
thousand of expatriates who have stepped into Phuket as a
backpacker / tourist and have decided to make the stay longer,
enticed by the aesthetic and exotic bounty that Phuket presents.
People who seek to live in this part of the world and fish for a
mode of income to support them or for a little pocket money or
to lengthen a long holiday; turn to teaching English as the
solution. Although the employment opportunities for teachers are
limited in this part of Thailand, compared to centres like
Bangkok, most teachers spend at least some time here. Teaching
is a viable option and the teachers are in considerably high
demand. A job isn’t either too difficult if you have the
qualifications and the right approach. Further beyond
qualification appearance is one of the most important things
Thai schools look at when hiring English teachers.
Education in Thailand is free and compulsory for all Thai
children between the ages of 7 and 14, and about 90 percent of
the children are enrolled in either public primary schools or
those operated by Buddhist monasteries. Only 33 percent of all
eligible children attend secondary schools. Education has kept
pace with the growing cosmopolitan character of Phuket.
Types of schools prevailing in Phuket are:
Nurseries & Kindergartens : For children aged 18 months to
6 years, there are nurseries and kindergartens available. All
have English speaking staff and cater mainly to expat and
mixed children.
Primary Schools : There are several Thai primary
schools in Phuket, both government and private. A few of the
private schools have bilingual programmes.
Secondary Schools : All secondary schools are
government schools with Thai language curriculums.
International Schools : There are two international
schools for both day and boarding students from 18 months to
18 years of age.
Adult Education : Adult education is provided at the
Phuket Non-Formal Education Centre to serve adult learners
from primary education to upper secondary level including
vocational programmes and foreign language courses.
There's work of teaching English in Phuket City and Pattong and
all over the Island. A growing number of private language
schools which specialize in ESL and English for the hospitality
industry add on to the job opportunities. Since there are so
many tourists and international business opportunities in Phuket,
teachers may be able find students to tutor individually or in
small groups, as well. To obtain a secure teaching position in
Thailand, it is important to obtain a teacher's license as well
as a work permit which the employer should apply on behalf of
the recruited.
